How to sell electricity to power companies with solar energySolar energy is a clean, renewable energy source that can be used to generate electricity. If you own a solar installation and want to sell that electricity to power companies, there are several large-scale financial models you can use. In this article, we’ll look at three financial models commonly used to sell solar electricity to power companiesHow to sell electricity to power companies with solar energy.

1. Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) How to sell electricity to power companies with solar energy

How to selA power purchase agreement (PPA) is one of the most commonly used financial models for selling solar electricity on a large scale. In this model, the solar developer owns the solar installation and sells the electricity produced to the power company, also known as the “buyer” or “offtaker”. For example, we offer PPAs to some of our customers where we own the solar installation and they pay us to use the electricity. In this case, you would be the solar developer and the power company that buys the electricity would be the buyer. This financial model generally works well for commercial and industrial solar installations.

2. Public Utilities Regulatory Policy Act 1978 (PURPA)

The Public Utilities Regulatory Policy Act of 1978 (PURPA) encourages economic competition in the generation and distribution of solar energy. If your solar installation meets PURPA’s requirements as a “Qualified Facility” (QF), you have the right to connect your solar installation to a grid controlled by an electricity company to distribute your energy to the power companies. In addition, if your facility is less than 20 MW, utilities must meet a mandatory purchase obligation where they pay for your renewable electricity at an avoided cost. The avoided cost is what the utility would have paid to buy or produce that electricity if your QF didn’t exist. This model could be suitable for your solar installation, especially if it is small in size.

3. Leasing land to power companies

If you own commercial real estate, you can also make money from solar energy by renting your land to power companies to install their solar installations. This option is less straightforward than the other models mentioned here, but it’s another good way to take advantage of renewable energy. How to sell electricity to power companies with solar energy

In conclusion, selling electricity to power companies through solar energy is a great revenue opportunity for solar developers, landowners and businesses. Using financial models such as Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), the PURPA Act, and land leasing, you can leverage solar energy to generate sustainable revenue and contribute to the energy transition to a greener economy.

Don’t forget to check local regulations and work with solar energy professionals to ensure you meet all legal requirements and maximize the potential of your solar installation

he amount of sunlight that strikes the earth’s surface in an hour and a half is enough to handle the entire world’s energy consumption for a full year. Solar technologies convert sunlight into electrical energy either through photovoltaic (PV) panels or through mirrors that concentrate solar radiation. This energy can be used to generate electricity or be stored in batteries or thermal storage.

Below, you can find resources and information on the basics of solar radiation, photovoltaic and concentrating solar-thermal power technologies, electrical grid systems integration, and the non-hardware aspects (soft costs) of solar energy. You can also learn more about how to go solar and the solar energy industry. In addition, you can dive deeper into solar energy and learn about how  the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Energy Technologies Office is driving innovative research and development in these areas.

Solar Energy 101

Solar radiation is light – also known as electromagnetic radiation – that is emitted by the sun. While every location on Earth receives some sunlight over a year, the amount of solar radiation that reaches any one spot on the Earth’s surface varies. Solar technologies capture this radiation and turn it into useful forms of energy.
